12/14/2023 0 Comments Modern dredge post banSince I expected Dredge to get hit by this announcement, I had already been thinking about whether Dredge could survive post-ban. Without Probe, these decks will now have to be piloted more conservatively to respect potential disruption from the opponent, leading to less Turn 3 wins. Gitaxian Probe was also often the culprit behind these quick wins, as it let the player see if the coast was clear and go for the win without having to worry about being disrupted. That being said, Wizards has made it clear with previous bans that they want Modern to be a Turn 4 format, and both Infect and Suicide Zoo were very much in the realms of being a Turn 3 deck. If the community can accept this, they can follow this notion in the future and unban more cards, which I think will help keep the format evolving.Īs for Gitaxian Probe, I don’t necessarily have much of an opinion on it, as I think the power level of the card was too high but the decks it belonged too were not. Personally, I like that they banned Golgari Grave-Troll over something else like Prized Amalgam, as it sets a precedent that they are willing to unban cards but it’s on a trial run and can find itself back on the banned list if it ends up being too good. To those who have been keeping up with the format, this wouldn’t come as a surprise, as Dredge was clearly too powerful while Gitaxian Probe was fundamentally broken and pushed the boundaries on power level. Last week, the Banned & Restricted Announcement was released, and Golgari Grave-Troll and Gitaxian Probe became banned in Modern.
